Quakewire republishes earthquake reports from national agencies. Using the site means accepting the terms below — the first of which is the one that matters.

This is not an early warning system

Nothing here reaches you before an earthquake. Reports appear only after a national agency has detected and published one, typically two to five minutes afterwards. Do not use this service to decide whether to evacuate, and do not wait for it during shaking. Follow the official channels of your national agency — in Indonesia, BMKG and BNPB.

Accuracy

Earthquake data is republished as the reporting agency provides it. First solutions are produced automatically and have not been reviewed by an analyst; magnitude, depth, and location are frequently revised in the hours that follow, sometimes substantially. Event pages are updated when a revision arrives.

The service is provided as is, with no warranty that any report is accurate, complete, current, or available. We do not control the upstream feeds and cannot correct errors in them. To the fullest extent permitted by law, the operator accepts no liability for any loss arising from reliance on this service.

Availability

There is no uptime commitment. Polling may stop, feeds may fail, and notifications may be delayed or never arrive — push delivery depends on your browser vendor’s infrastructure, not ours. Treat a quiet feed as an absence of information, never as confirmation that nothing has happened.

Data sources and attribution

Earthquake data comes from the U.S. Geological Survey and BMKG. Neither agency endorses this service or is responsible for it. Map tiles are supplied by Esri, drawing on Esri, HERE, Garmin, and OpenStreetMap contributors, and are subject to their own terms.

Our own presentation — the writing, layout, and generated share cards — may be quoted with attribution and a link.

Using the API

The public JSON feed at /api/quakes is open and may be used freely, subject to two things: keep request volume reasonable, and attribute the original agencies rather than us, since the data is theirs. The endpoint may change or disappear without notice.

Acceptable use

Do not present this data as an official agency source, or in a way that implies endorsement by USGS or BMKG.
Do not use it to generate false alarms, or in any system where a delayed or missing report could endanger someone.
Do not attempt to disrupt the service or access the administrative interface.

These terms may change; the date at the top reflects the current version. Continuing to use the site after a change means accepting it. Questions go to hello@quakewire.com.
